US-Denmark Program 2016: Logistical Information at UCSC

The course will begin at 9 am (PST) on Monday August 1st in the Simularium (Room E2-180) of the Engineering 2 Building on Science Hill at UC Santa Cruz. Please refer to a map of the UCSC campus to get your bearings.

Meals, in general, will be hosted in the Cowell College Dining Hall beginning with a 6 pm dinner on July 31. Meal times are fixed for the group, so plan to arrive roughly at the times specified in the Dining Hall Information document. Please note, there are dates where we will be leaving early for an activity in which case the location and time may change; this information will be given in the agenda. If someone has dietary restrictions that have not been accounted for, do not hesitate to contact Rachel (rcordero@soe.ucsc.edu).

Accommodation has been arranged in the Crown-Merrill Apartments Conference Housing. Our group will be housed in Building 4. There will be two participants per room and two rooms per apartment; each apartment has a kitchen, dining, and living room. However, no cooking is allowed. There is a refrigerator for your use; bed linens and towels will be provided but you should bring your own toiletries and Ethernet cables. Upon check-in, you will be receiving an arrival packet containing:

  • Room Key
  • Meal Card
  • Santa Cruz Metro bus pass (UCSC buses are free to ride)
  • Print out of the agenda, maps, bus schedules

If arriving on July 31 between the hours of 2 – 4 pm, convenient check-in is provided directly in Building 4. If arriving outside of this time frame, you will need to check-in at the Central Conference Office (7 am to 8 pm) to receive your room key and arrival packet. The conference office is only open until 8 pm, if arriving after hours you will need to call security to be let into your room at (831) 459-2100 and then check-in the following day.

Getting Around. Once on campus, it is easy to get to the course location or around campus. There are free shuttle buses that loop around UCSC every 20 minutes; though the distance between housing and the course is walkable. We have provided a walking map that notes the walking time and location of shuttle stops. You will be provided with a Santa Cruz Metro bus pass as well with which you can explore the city or beach at your leisure. Here is a link to the Metro schedule.

Arrival Information. There are numerous shuttle companies that provide airport (SFO or SJC) pickup and drop-off in Santa Cruz. Some directly bring you to your location on campus (Crown-Merrill Apartments) while some have specific drop-off points in the city. Your shuttle ticket is reimbursable by the Summer Program so we recommend getting dropped off on campus. If you are arriving via public transport or are dropped off in Santa Cruz, you can arrive on campus by taxi or by public bus which directly serve UCSC. Please note, public transport from the airport, especially SFO, is time consuming and difficult. If you do plan to use public transport for whatever reason (shuttle not available, cost effective, etc.) please contact the program coordinators to help with the arrangements. Transportation from UCSC to UC Davis is already arranged for August 6.
